Swallowtails, apollos, peacock butterfly, admirals,
tortoiseshells, emperors, etc. - the largest and most striking
butterflies at aglance! The typical characteristics are described
with the help of pictures. Short outdoor videos make identification
easier. The species that are most likely to be encountered in Austria, Central Europe, are described in darker letters. The eastern and southern parts of Austria are warmer than the western, where you find mountains up to ~3800m (12500 feet) called Alps. Here are a few group videos: first large tortoiseshell, comma and map butterfly, second silver-washed fritillary, lesser purple emperor and map butterfly, third purple emperor and lesser purple emperor (Apatura iris and ilia) and fourth map butterflies 2nd brood (Araschnia levana). We met all of these groups on June 30, 2023 at a 50m² small area in Lower Austria. |
